Overview

Tuesday, November 3, 2026

On the November 3 general election, Fargo Public Schools will have a question on the ballot for approval of an excess mill levy. The approval would grant Fargo Public Schools the authority to maintain its current offerings in its schools. Providing this authority ensures that the District can continue to cover the costs of offering a comprehensive educational experience for all students.

Vote

Ballot Question

The ballot question is:

The current Fargo Public School District’s general fund levy is 127.00 mills. The current statutory general fund limitation is seventy mills on the dollar of the taxable valuation of the school district.

Shall Fargo Public School District No. 1 have a general fund mill levy of 110.00 mills effective December 31, 2027?

FAQs

What does a “yes” vote mean?
Fargo Public Schools (FPS) will receive tax dollars based on the true assessed value of individual property. FPS will
continue to provide quality educational opportunities for all students in the District.

What does a “no” vote mean?
FPS will be frozen at the actual property tax dollars collected in the 2027-28 fiscal year, which means the
District will no longer receive additional general fund tax dollars based on the true assessed value of individual
property as the city grows or property values change.

What impact will there be on students if the vote fails?
There will be a direct impact on programming and services provided to FPS students and families. The District will need to make budget adjustments, including cuts, reductions and reorganizations to programs, staffing, and services.

In 2017, FPS was approved for an excess levy of 127 mills. Why are you asking for 110 mills now?
For the 2025-26 school year, the FPS School Board chose to structure its general fund levy authority into separate
levies as allowable by law:

  • 109.98 mills General Fund
  • 12 mills Miscellaneous Fund
  • 4.8 mills Tuition Fund

Due to this restructuring, the District is seeking a lower excess mill levy than the previous authorization. The miscellaneous fund mills and tuition fund mills will continue outside of this excess mill levy.
