What are Restorative Practices?

Restorative practices is a social science focused on fostering positive school communities through relationship-building and achieving social discipline via participatory learning and decision-making. These practices draw inspiration from community-centered traditions integral to Indigenous cultures worldwide for centuries. By emphasizing relationship-building, we can teach students the value of community and use those connections to encourage accountability when harm occurs (IIRP, 2011).

Restorative practices embody ancient wisdom and contemporary understanding of maintaining relationships that are constructive, open, and free, especially in the face of conflict. Modern approaches to consensus building, dialogue, and conflict resolution underscore that restorative practices are neither a trend nor a fleeting technique but a lasting framework (Safe Supportive Learning, 2016).
