Frequently Asked Questions

Students graduate from the ML program when they score 4.5 overall and above 3.5 in all domains on the WIDA ACCESS. Research shows that it takes 1 – 2 years to learn conversational English and 5 or more years to learn academic English.

An ML teacher will contact you. These documents are sent home when a student qualifies for ML services and can be translated upon request: 

• Parent Notification Letter – sent first month of school
• ILP plan - sent during first semester
• Parent copy of ACCESS scores - sent last month of school

Your Home Language Survey said a language other than English is present in your student’s daily life, you tell the school your child needs language support, or your student was identified by the classroom teacher as needing additional language support.

• Fall and Spring School Conferences
• Phone calls, emails, and notes from teachers
• ML Program documents sent home
• Interpreter help - provided upon request

• HLS - Home Language Survey: a form filled out by you to determine if your student has frequent interaction in a language other than English in their daily life
• Parent Notification of Eligibility - a letter stating your child qualifies for ML services
• ILP - Individualized Language Plan: a document that says what services will be provided to your student
• ACCESS - annual testing to determine if your student will graduate from the ML program
• Program Exit Letter - a letter stating your child has graduated from the ML Program
   

Talk to your student’s classroom teacher or the school office about your concerns. They will help you with what to do next.

Please talk to your student’s classroom teacher or school office if one or more of the following are true:

• Your student has interaction in a language other than English for a significant amount of time during the day
• Your student only had teachers who teach in a language other than English
• Your student prefers to use a language other than English
• Your dialect of English is different enough from US English that you/your student have miscommunications with others, need to repeat yourself, or frequently need to ask someone else to repeat themselves
• You do not speak enough English yet to help your student with schoolwork

If any of these are true, your school’s ML teacher can answer any questions you have and can screen your student to see if they need language support.
 

Talk to the school office or your student’s ML or classroom teacher. They will help you request an interpreter. You can request that documents and emails be translated too!

Talk to your student’s ML teacher. They will give you these forms to sign:

• ML Refusal of Services Form
• ACCESS Test Refusal Form (SFN 61287)

Any student who does not have these two forms on file and qualifies for the ML program will receive ML services and ACCESS testing.
