2024 Summer Leadership School


Summer Leadership School (AS103)

June 3-8 (60 hours/ ½ Credit)

Program is limited to 49 cadets.  Only those students that are enrolled in the 2024/2025 School Year AFJROTC Program are eligible to attend this course.

This is a 6 day live-in encampment at Camp Wilderness in Park Rapids, MN.  Students attending will be instructed in self-improvement, standards and expectations, welfare, and hygiene.  Students learn the heritage and organizational traditions of AFJROTC, proper flag etiquette, and personal behavior.  Activities include aircraft orientation flights, high ropes course, zip line, climbing wall, team building activities, kayaking, and physical fitness competitions.  Parents may call 446-2295 for more information.  All persons must call CMSgt Gibson at 446-2295 to arrange for uniform issue.  Please do not call to make uniform issue appointments prior to 15 Apr 2024.  UNIFORM ISSUE IS MANDATORY TO ATTEND SUMMER LEADERSHIP SCHOOL (SLS) – last day for uniform issue will be May 20th – uniform issue is by appointment only.  Prior to attending SLS, students must complete 5 forms (SLS Parental Medical Release Form, SLS Rules, AFJROTC Parent Consent Form, Parental Photo Release Form, and FPS Student Travel Authorization Form).  These forms are provided below.  Signed forms must be turned in no later than 28 May.

YOUNG EAGLE FLIGHTS:  On Monday, June 3rd, SLS cadets will have the opportunity to receive an airplane ride through the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles Program.  The EAA will provide airplanes and pilots to give each cadet a ride at no cost to the cadet.  Here is the link for you to sign up your student for an airplane ride;  After signing up, you MUST print off the waiver and have it signed by a parent or guardian.  Please bring this form to us at the Friday night orientation on May 31st or the morning of June 3rd.  This form must be completed in order to get an airplane ride. 

ORIENTATION MEETING:  There is a SLS orientation meeting for all students attending SLS at 4:30PM on Friday, 31 May at South High School.  The meeting will be held in the main gym and will last until 5:30PM.  It is mandatory for all students attending SLS.  Students are required to wear their ABU/OCP uniform for the meeting.  If for some reason your child is not able to attend, please call CMSgt Gibson. 

GRADUATION CEREMONY:  Parents, family, and friends are invited to attend the Graduation Parade that will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, 8 June in the gymnasium at Fargo South High School.  This is an opportunity for you to see the marching skills your child has learned during SLS.  We will also be giving out completion certificates and awards during the parade.  The parade should be completed by 1:30PM and your child will be released to you at that time.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  The Fargo AFJROTC Parent Group will be offering financial scholarships for students that cannot afford the cost of attending SLS.  The below application form specifies the eligibility requirements and information needed to apply for the scholarships.  Scholarship applications must be submitted to the AFJROTC instructors at Fargo South by Wednesday, 1 May 2024.

Out of district students must follow the registration procedures outlined on page 20 of the FPS Summer School Handbook.
