Portrait of a Leader

Communication
Leaders communicate clearly, honestly, consistently, and with intention. They listen to understand, communicate in ways that fit the situation, build trust through respectful and transparent interactions, and connect people to a shared vision while recognizing how words and actions impact others.
Respectful
Leaders demonstrate respect by listening to understand, valuing different perspectives, and assuming positive intent. They build trust through empathy, integrity, accountability, and consistent actions, creating an environment where people feel valued, heard, and able to disagree while working toward a shared purpose.
Empathy
Empathy is the intentional practice of genuinely seeking to understand the perspectives, emotions, and needs of others without bias or judgment before responding. An empathetic leader listens actively, recognizes that people are shaped by different experiences, and provides support with genuine care and concern. Empathy does not mean excusing behavior or lowering expectations; it means separating the person from the action, giving grace, and helping people move forward with both support and accountability.
Integrity
Integrity is aligning a leader’s words, actions, decisions, and remaining steadfast in the commitment to the values of the organization. A leader with integrity is honest, trustworthy, fair, and willing to do what is right even when it is difficult, unpopular, or unseen. Integrity also means holding yourself to the same standards you expect of others, following through on commitments, and owning our mistakes. Leaders with integrity understand that both their actions and inactions send a message.
Collaboration
A collaborative leader is open-minded and inclusive. They intentionally leverage the strengths and perspectives of the team by actively listening, knowing when to speak and when to step back, and willingly invite others to the conversation. They genuinely value all voices to co-create solutions while maintaining clarity around shared outcomes. Grounded in trust and authenticity, leaders are willing to disagree but demonstrate unity, commitment, and alignment once decisions are made.
