Restorative Practices in Schools

FPS Philosophy: Fargo Public Schools employs restorative practices with mindsets focused on addressing harm and repairing relationships in response to negative behaviors.

Supporting Statement: The mission of the Fargo Public Schools, to educate and empower all students to succeed, can best be fulfilled through use of restorative practices to facilitate changes in culture and practice.

Supporting Statement: Restorative practices in schools are born and rooted in the values and practices of indigenous cultures around the world and have more than 30 years of research to support their impact. Fargo Public Schools believes the implementation of restorative practices school-wide is critical to creating the schools we envision. When implemented with fidelity, restorative practices create pathways to eliminate disparities in discipline, a factor in the school to-prison pipeline.

Supporting Statement: Restorative practices allow individuals who may have committed harm to take full responsibility for their behavior. Taking full responsibility requires understanding how the behavior affected other(s), acknowledging that the behavior was harmful to other(s), taking action to repair the harm, and learning healthier, more productive behaviors for the future.
