Welcome to the Walking School Bus! |
![]()
A "Walking School Bus" is powered by legs rather then an engine and is designed for students who live within a mile of their school. This activity allows trained adults to supervise or act as the "bus driver". While the bus moves quickly through the route, it makes several stops at designated meeting places picking up additional children along the way, allowing children to enjoy the fresh air, to get some exercise and enjoy interactacting with each other on the way to school. Walking to and from school each day can add a half hour of activity and exercise! The goal of the "Walking School Bus" is to promote physical activity for today's youth by encouraging students, parents, community leaders and school staff who live within a one to two mile radius of the school to walk to school instead of commuting by car. GOALS for the "Walking School Bus" also include:
¨ Increasing daily physical activity for children and adults in the neighborhood. ¨ Increasing safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. ¨ Reducing traffic around the neighborhood and school. ¨ Increasing community connections by helping neighbors to get to know one another.
